UK System or Europe System in International School

The presence of international schools in Indonesia is now increasingly emerging. International schools offer quality education systems or international standards.
With that international term, some schools add a specific curriculum that is unique outside the national curriculum. These schools apply learning processes with their own characteristics.
The main thing to remember is the way the school provides education according to children’s potential based on the education system it offers. The journey of education is a comprehensive and continuous plan for the stages of education that children will go through, from kindergarten to college.
Therefore, to understand and plan an important educational trip for parents, it must first be understood the uniqueness of the education system in Indonesia today. At present, in general there are two education systems that are recognized and implemented in Indonesia. Both education systems have different teaching characteristics and ways and will produce the next generation with different potentials. There is a UK system and Europe system based curriculum.
The UK System
Cambridge United Kingdom or England is home to some of the oldest universities in the world, including Cambridge (1209) and Oxford (1096). Not surprisingly, the UK has the most rooted education system in the world. Since 1880 the UK has implemented a compulsory education program for children aged 5 to 10 years. In 2013 the education system in this country then increased the age of compulsory education until the age of 18 years. The system is considered to have fulfilled the educational needs of children from 6 to 18 years of age or from elementary level to university. This 16-year education system has an emphasis on mastering subject matter and expertise as the main focus and recognition of renowned qualifications including PSLE certification, O level, and A level. All three are recognized internationally in all schools and related companies.
European System
International Baccalaureate (IB) The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a series of educational systems that can meet the educational needs of children from the age of 3 to 19 years. This education system applies the curriculum extensively and encourages balanced mastery of material, including concentration of learning in students and emphasis on the global context. This system also stimulates students to become lifelong learners by having high enthusiasm for learning and empathy. A global scale study notes that IB schools are considered the most effective way to develop graduates carefully with a combination of outside curriculum resources provided by the IB. Manoharan Karthigasu, one of the education practitioners in Indonesia who has a deep understanding of the International Baccalaureate (IB) education system, said that this education system aims to develop students with a broad level of knowledge. In this case students develop both physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. “This program also aims to increase motivation, confidence and educate students to dare to express their opinions. In this system, students are encouraged to be able to apply what they learn to what is happening in the environment. This makes the teaching and learning system more contextual and personal meaning for children, “Manoharan said. Manorahan added, this system of students was also taught to examine the issues that were developing and how the issue had an impact on the world. Not only that. Students also learn to understand how these issues can be related to each other; allows students to develop mindsets and perspectives globally.

5 Wrong People Paradigm for International Schools

At present the central government requires local governments to organize at least one education unit at all levels of education. For example the level of international school education. Then each region must have at least one international school.
Cost
The most distinguishing aspect is about school fees, starting from registration fees, shuttle transportation fees, building fees, and exam fees. If added together, it can reach 100 million rupiah per year.
The high cost of education can make education segmentation. In theory, education should be accessible to anyone.
Facilities
The facilities provided by the international are indeed quite complete adjusting to the price paid. Starting from shuttle facilities using school buses, sports fields, good and air-conditioned rooms, libraries, sophisticated laboratories, clean canteens, internet access etc.
Prestige
It turned out that there was a fatal thing that became a paradigm error in the implementation of international schools. The character of the Indonesian people who still prioritize symbols and impact status also on international schools. The International Standard School has such a flashy and complete facility, as well as the presentation of material delivered in foreign languages.
Whereas it should be, education is forming character as an individual and culture as a society, so that the more important thing in an international school is what curriculum is delivered to those international students. international schools should be curriculum-based with good global wisdom, so that students not only have the capacity of an intellectual world, but have character.
Value
The values taught are different. What should be taught is no longer memorization and normative definitions of an object of study, but what is taught is the values of civilization, humanity, world welfare, plurality (not pluralism), and spiritual morals.
The point is how to prepare students to be able to make contributions that are ready to build international world civilization. It is no longer making them memorizers and places of knowledge without being released.
With this paradigm error, it is expected that there will be no significant difference between students graduating from traditional schools and international school graduates. Even international school graduates now have the potential to become graduates with high prestige but low in fighting power, this is because international school participants continue to be spoiled with complete facilities without being accompanied by a curriculum that teaches independence for example. So the emphasis is that international school graduates can contribute not only domestically, but also internationally.

How the assessment criteria of international school

About International School
International school is school that applied international education system in their school. Teacher, student, language, all designed based on international system. International school in Indonesia also called as Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama (SPK). “International School” has changed name as SPK because “international” label can be salling point by some school that used it and in fact that school not apply international school. So, parents not get the international curriculum for their children.
SPK also required to get some government rules. SPK must take accreditation process, national exam (Ujian Nasional), SPK still has to teach Citizenship, Indonesian Language and Religion subjects for Indonesian students.
Quality of Education
The quality of education in international schools applies international education standards which use the Cambridge and IB curriculum. The essence of Cambridge that schools can take and apply now is how to apply the learning approach used by Cambridge to make students become “reflective learners”. The word “reflective learner” for me was first heard and rather difficult it seems to define clearly its meaning. From the various literacy that I am looking for, there is no definite definition of the meaning of “reflective learner”, but I can conclude from the characteristics listed in the Cambridge module that “reflective learner” is how to form students into a true learner, learn how to learn and manage change both for himself and his environment.
Quality of Teacher
Teachers in international schools come from various countries in the world, for example USA, England, Australia, China, India, and so on.
Quality of Facilities
Facilities for academic learning in several international schools are quite interesting to discuss. Some examples are IT laboratories, science laboratories, visual arts laboratories, and libraries. Each student can use these facilities to develop academic value at school.
With complete facilities as mentioned earlier, students are more enthusiastic and active in learning. This means that with adequate facilities they are able to innovate and explore any project that must be completed. Every available facility is guarded by teaching staff who are competent in their field. That way students more easily absorb the lessons given without significant obstacles.
Quality of Alumni
Prospects for graduates of international schools are to work on an international scale or continue their studies at leading universities in the world. Several international schools in Indonesia have produced graduates who study at Cambridge University. Hopefully international school alumni can boast and build this country for the better.

Some Components in IB (International Baccalaureate) Curriculum

In IB curriculum, each student will be allowed to choose 6 (six) subjects from the fields of mathematics, art, social studies, language and experimental experience.
The assessment of each subject will be divided into 3 components, namely:
  1. Extended Essay
Students will be given a topic and asked to complete an essay (a kind of paper questions) for 4000 words. To complete this task, students must carry out research, either through articles, journals, surveys, and other methods that are in accordance with the subjects taken. These students are required to be independent, apply the knowledge they have learned to discuss and analyze the topics given.
The process of completing this extended essay is very helpful for students to adjust undergraduate lectures. Because of all undergraduate lectures, assignments like this will be held for all courses as part of the assessment process.
  1. Theory of Knowledge
This process addresses 6 fields, namely ethics, history, art, mathematics, science and social sciences. Here students are trained to express opinions, arguments, accompanied by theories they have learned, or supported by relevant news they have read (both from articles, television, journals and others).
These students will be tested how they understand the lessons they have learned, and how they can apply them in analyzing and resolving real cases that occur in the world or in everyday life / application in real life.
Every student can have a different view of a problem. Often answers are not judged from right and wrong, but through how students convey their point of view and how students convey and strengthen their arguments. From here, besides being able to see how deeply the students understand the concept of the lesson delivered, the emotions of each student can also be seen and assessed.
  1. CAS (Creative, Action, Service)
CAS is a project carried out outside the classroom. Students can choose according to the subjects they take. For example for social science subjects, students can make a project “organize blood donor events”, or “educate the public about the importance of education” and so on.
After determining the desired topic and according to the subject, students must arrange the implementation of the project. This trains students to jump into the field, conduct interactions with people, conduct surveys and research, then present it in the report. Thus, students will be more open-minded and have the opportunity to apply the theories they learned in class in the real world.
  1. Excess IBs from pre-university programs
According to the most students, IB programs are more difficult than pre-university programs. But things learned are also more and more profound. Because in addition to studying theory, students will also be involved in practical activities or projects such as CAS.
But precisely for this reason, the IB program is highly regarded in various renowned universities in the world. Many universities will receive credit from the IB, so students with qualifications can graduate their degrees more quickly.

Differentiator between National and International Schools?

Luxury buildings and complete play facilities are often things for consideration in choosing a school. Physical appearance does not guarantee the quality of education. Children must have heard the names of international schools, national schools, and national schools plus. Since 2015, the international school label has been changed to the Collaborative Education Unit. Except for international diplomacy schools, which are established specifically for certain citizens living in Indonesia. Well, what’s the difference between a national school and an international school?

Curriculum. This is the main difference between national and international schools. Local and private schools use the national curriculum, which is set by the Ministry of Education and Culture. While international schools refer to international curricula, such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Cambridge International Examination (CIE). National schools plus the SBI (International Standard National School) aka another. SBI combines both. The main foundation remains the national curriculum, but there is an additional international curriculum.

Just so you know, to be able to use the IB and Cambridge curriculum, a school must get official certification from the institution concerned. The process is long, takes months, or even more than a year. Schools must conduct teacher training according to international curriculum standards, complete various requirements, follow the assessment process, and in the end do not necessarily receive permission to use the international curriculum.

Language of instruction. Following the curriculum used, national schools use Indonesian as the language of instruction. While in international schools, all teaching materials will be delivered in English (and Mandarin). For national schools plus, there are several subjects that use English. Usually it’s math, science and English that uses an international curriculum. In international schools, most or the teachers are native speaker. Chating directly with them is believed to give children experience about how to pronounce English correctly.

Learning Materials. This also still refers to the curriculum used. Subjects of students in national schools are more than students in international schools. Fewer international schools focus on math, physics, chemistry, english, mandarin, and some optional lessons. Automatic, each subject’s study hours are longer and deeper. Story-shaped questions are also given more than numbers. While in national schools a lot of subject matter requires memorization.

Examination. In national schools, test schedules can be very crowded. Within a day, there are an average of two to three replications. While in international schools, the repetition schedule is more limited to one subject per day.

School facility. International schools have a higher standard of comfort. For example, the entire air-conditioned classrooms, complete library book collections, sports fields and swimming pools are available, multimedia learning media, canteens as cool as mall food courts, and so on. Of course not only international schools like that. Now there are also many national and national schools plus facilities that are no less comfortable and complete.
